CVAC Launches "Why I love Canada 2" WILC2
WILC 2 - CVAC Launches "Why I love Canada 2"
March 31, 2012
Attention creators:
"Why I love Canada" is a broad, complex question with answers as varied as the country itself. With this in mind, CVAC invites Cowichan Valley artists of all genres including painters, sculptures, dancers, jewellers, potters, singers, poets, glass artists, film makers etc., to take part in an exciting opportunity to produce five commissioned works for display and viewing in July 2013.
Local artists are invited to form collaborative groups of at least two individuals (families welcome) and to submit a proposal for a creative product that interprets one of the following themes based on community responses: Canada's Environmental Ambience, Canadian Icons, Canadian Values, Cultural Assets, Heritage and Natural Canada.
Five groups will be awarded commissions valued at $400 each.
The deadline for group draft proposals is May 15, 2012. The five successful applicant groups will be announced June 30, 2012.
Successful applicant groups need to:
- be members in good standing of the Cowichan Valley Arts Council
- be prepared to work in collaborative groupings of 2 or more
- have resided in the Cowichan Valley Regional District (as described as the area north of the Malahat and including the Town of Ladysmith) for a minimum of three months before their date of application
- have one group representative who is 18 years or older to conduct in all dealings with CVAC
- reflect some aspect of the community responses (see above) to the question in the production of an original creation
- prepare an accompanying statement containing the names of the participants, the rationale behind the work, and a written (or otherwise recorded) statement of the cooperation/collaboration undertaken by the members. While in some cases the work will not necessarily be equal; the contribution and the value of the contribution must be shared.
- be prepared to contribute to footage for a video documentation of the process
- price their project for sale during the duration of the show. The committee understands that performance items could be commissioned for other venues etc., but visual items must be for sale during the duration of any visual art show. A 10% commission payable to CVAC on all sales of visual art will apply.
- attend all Why I Love Canada 2 functions during the period between July 2012 and June 2013
- In order to maintain community interest and keep momentum building for the culmination, post 50 words or more on a specific blogsite established by CVAC, at least once in each of the months July, 2012 - June 2013 inclusive.
Criteria for selection:
1.) The written proposal needs to be type-written on no more than 2 - 81/2 x 11 sheets of paper. It must contain the concept and the details necessary for a clear picture to be envisioned by the adjudicators. Graphic details, pictures and supporting materials will assist in this process.
2.) The final project needs to be accompanied by a group statement for use in the promotion of the final results. It must contain the names, addresses, contact information, ages if appropriate, and biographical information.
3.) The proposal and final project need to clearly reflect your theme.
4.) The proposal needs to ensure professional technique and craftsmanship.
5.) The proposal needs to reflect creativity in its approach to the theme.
6.) The final project needs to stand on its own artistic merit, outside of the theme.
7.) AS much as is possible adjudicators will endeavour to ensure that the final five projects reflect variety of genres, theme, concepts and execution styles.

Cowichan Valley Arts Council (CVAC) Launches 'Why I love Canada 2" Commission.
"Why I love Canada". It is a broad, complex question with answers as varied as the country itself. With this in mind, CVAC invites Cowichan Valley artists of all genres including painters, sculptures, dancers, jewellers, potters, singers, poets, glass artists, film makers etc., to take part in an exciting opportunity to produce five commissioned works for display and viewing in just over a year from now.
It works this way. During the next few weeks CVAC representatives will go far and wide asking Cowichan residents of all ages and backgrounds the question: 'What is it that makes Canada my home?" Once all of the answers have been received they will be collated and general themes will be posted on the CVAC website.
One sentence responses to the question 'What is it that makes Canada my home?" can be sent to whyilovecanada@gmail.com
Local artists will then be invited to collaborate with each other and submit a proposal that interprets one of the themes. Of these groups, five will be awarded commissions valued at $400 each.
The deadline for group draft proposals is May 15, 2012. The five successful groups to be awarded commissions will be announced June 30, 2012. Funds for the contest were given to CVAC by an anonymous local citizen, who remains very concerned about Canada's place in the present global reality.
"We are very much looking forward to the responses we receive from the community. These answers will form the foundation of the project. It is certainly a large question with lots of room for artistic interpretation. We are fortunate to have so many artists and artisans in the Cowichan Valley who I am confident will come together to do justice to the question," said Robert Radford, WILC2 committee member.
"We had a similar contest last year with two artists working together. The rest were single submissions. This year, we have placed much more emphasis on collaboration between a broad spectrum of artists. It will be fun to see what they come up with together over the next year or so."
For more information about the contest please visit PORTALS - The CVAC Centre of Arts, Culture and Heritage, 2687 James Street, Duncan BC. www.cowichanvalleyartscouncil.ca or call CVAC at 250-746-1633
