"I think Thom would be very happy with this show," said longtime partner Chris Sieja. The Cowichan Valley Arts Council has assembled tons of Anderson's work spanning his early teens to pieces under construction before his death Oct. 31 at age 54. "Thom was very versatile and worked with lots for media," Sieja said of his fantastic, madcap wooden sculptures, acrylic paintings, clay rakus and more. "I hope people get an appreciation of quite a famous artist who lived here," she said. During his 25-year career, Anderson made nearly 5,000 works collected across North America, Europe, Asia and Scandinavia. Notable collectors include B.C.'s former finance minister Carole Taylor, art gallery owner Diane Farris, movie stars Danny DeVito, Mel Gibson, Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell, singer k.d. lang, directors Penny Marshall and Rob Reiner, Irish Rover Will Millar and others. CVAC's Ron Greenaway's essay on Anderson said he was influenced by comic art, Surrealists and the 1980s Outsider Art movement. "Painting is pure philosophy for me," Anderson said. "I take painting deadly seriously, which isn't good. Woodcarving keeps me grounded. If I only painted I'd probably float off the planet. "Each painting for me is like a kid opening up a present on Christmas morning. I start with a seed of an idea, plant that, and see what grows out of it - cerebral farming in a way. "If I knew exactly what it would be, it wouldn't be any fun. With carving, the Merry Prankster takes satirical barbs at society. I'll have an end result in mind and just work toward that."
