The Next Generation

The Cowichan Valley Arts Centre gallery welcomes the Valley's next generation of artists who applied for CVAC's annual scholarship awards into the Arts Centre space.

Glenn Spicer, scholarship chairman, asked the Exhibition Committee to assist in mounting a display of talented students' works for the month long show ending June 20th.

All CVAC members and the public are invited to enjoy the fine works on display, some of which are for sale with the entire proceeds of sales going to the artist to give them a leg up on their next course of studies. This exhibition also gives the artists a great first entry on their CVs - being a professionally curated exhibition.

The opening reception also featured a fashion show, all the more reason to attend CVAC's monthly gallery openings.

Check out the Exhibition Committee's call for entries for upcoming exhibitions of members' work.

Back up the ladder in the gallery, this has been guest columnist Jeffrey Birkin on behalf of the CVAC Exhibition Committee.

The next generation of valley artists is showing scholarship-worthy work until late June at the arts council’s downtown Duncan headquarters.

The multimedia Scholarship Show: The Next Generation opens with Thursday’s 4 p.m. performance gala. The NextGen show is a chance to see works from the entrants competing for the Cowichan Valley Arts Council's annual scholarship awards. It also allows residents a perspective on youths’ creative visions.

Entrants from four local secondary schools were invited last week to apply for CVAC’s three $500 awards this year.

Spokesman Jeffery Birkin noted response from Frances Kelsey students was far stronger, gaining the best chance at award dollars. Funds come from CVAC's annual budget. Award winners, judged by CVAC’s scholarship chairman-artist Glenn Spicer, will be announced Friday. “Entrants from the particularly arts-friendly Frances Kelsey Secondary School are featured prominently in the exhibition,” Birkin said. “It’s really a Kelsey show.”

CVAC offered six awards last year. That dropped to three due to the sour economy, he said. During the opener, entrants’ performances of music, dance and theatre will be invited during an open-mike session.

The arts council encourages the public to consider future donations of scholarship awards.

CVAC centre is open Tuesday to Friday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
