Enviromental Images Show, Featuring the work of Glenn Spicer (curator)

Enviromental Images are a mixture of photographs and enhanced images inspired by nature and humanity. I play with color, composition, and subject matter to create new ways to perceive the complex world around us and our interaction with it.

These prints are made with archival pigment inks, high quality acid free paper, double matted, acid free backing, and framed.

The Java World Café Satellite Gallery is a venue generously offered by Ron Jang (owner) in co-operation with the CVAC (Cowichan Valley Arts Council) and offers a place for artists, especially young or upcoming artists, to show their work and get experience and advice for putting on a professional show. Java World does not charge a commission and sales and insurance are the responsibility of the artist. Artists who are interested in putting on a show should contact Glenn Spicer at fredmole@shaw.ca or 250-748-7523.

Glenn Spicer

Biography and Statement

Glenn Spicer I was born 1947 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. After graduating with a B.Sc. in Biology at the University of Guelph, I worked there as a scientific illustrator, then as a scientific sculptor for the construction of the new Dinosaur Gallery of the Royal Ontario Museum. After working for a time as a Keeper at the Metropolitan Toronto Zoological Park, I moved to Vancouver, BC in 1976 where received my Professional Teachers Certification in Fine Arts and Biology. I then studied at the Emily Carr College of Art and Design under the accomplished sculptors Mark Prent, George Ramel, and George Norris. I was hired by the Vancouver Aquarium as the Senior Display Artist for the duration of the construction of the award winning Graham Amazon Gallery. In 1984 I moved to Maple Bay on Vancouver Island and established the Studio Metamorphoses and worked with Karl Schutz and the Chemainus Festival of Murals. I designed (with CADD), and built a spacious house and studio (working in all aspects of the construction) by the ocean overlooking picturesque Saltspring Island. I was the Vice President of the Cowichan Valley Arts Council for 3 years and was recently given the City of Duncan's Perpetual Artist Award.

The natural beauty of British Columbia is reflected extensively in my creations. I also draw upon my rich and varied background experience to create expressive realism in figurative and wildlife renditions and carefully executed stylized and abstracted forms.

My sculptures are cast, carved, and\or constructed in bronze, copper, steel, fiberglass, reinforced concrete, glass, stone, tile, and mixed media. My stained glass work is often detailed using sandblasting, etching, and carving on a variety of flat-rolled and hand blown coloured glass. My graphics include illustration, photography, painting, and printmaking.
