Artwork by Danial Gintowt

Daniel Gintowt

Daniel Gintowt is an anomaly in our artist community. He is an emerging primitive expressionist, of the most unique nature. Daniel was born in1958 in Montreal. He was educated in Canada and at the American School of Paris. He is untutored in the theory, history and traditional techniques of "art", but has attended Science Fiction and Fantasy Conventions, and co-founded an art group, the Birks House Artists.

According to Daniel he "is an artist at 50% passing educational wise", but without a doubt the process of making images and trying to express their place in his concept of the universe is his entire waking occupation. According to Daniel he arrived in our town because he wanted to become a member of the Cowichan Valley Arts Council. It is troubling at the least to know how to include Daniel's unique presence and contribution, but surely, he is a true "artist".

His imagery is Chagall-like and evocative. It is emotional and raw and seemingly never finished. He considers himself a "spiritual artist of Beyond Infinity...a conceptualist". Daniel has written many pieces of prose/poetry to explain his "conceptualist" beliefs, but to the rest of us, these writing are difficult to navigate, almost unintelligible. However, when you ask Daniel to tell you the story in his paintings, he begins to unravel a dream-tale embedded in iconic images, shapes, colour, and layer upon layer of collage. Informed by his personal, psychological journey and his fears and memories, his concept of soul is one that is clear and meaningful to Daniel alone.

Daniel has developed a method of image-making in which he paints, and then photographs his work, mounts it on foam core and then adds collage material, rephotographing what could be countless times. These treatments enhance the physical surface and serve to synthesize the images. Knowing when to stop is a problem for most artists; but with Daniel, he cannot cease. His art is truly is the personal unravelling of his endless thoughts.

Naomi McLean

Naomi McLean

26 – 6111 Sayward Road, Duncan, B.C.
Telephone (250)748-2081
Email: panamac@hotmail.com
Website: www3.telus.net/naomimclean

Drawing and painting came with growing up for Naomi as her mother taught her as a child, and she considers herself fortunate in having had good art teachers at school. She won the senior art cup in high school and attended the University of Cape Town’s art school for two years, studying mainly figure drawing, design, clay modeling, pottery and still life. Some years later she attended technical college in Durban, South Africa, studying painting and colour compatibility in oil paint.

There followed many years doing office work, being married, playing and teaching the violin, taking part in art workshops and bringing up a child.

After immigrating to Canada in 1982 she exhibited in numerous shows and sold paintings in several towns in Saskatchewan and British Columbia. She and her husband retired at the end of 2001 and moved to British Columbia, when she decided to concentrate on art. She joined several art groups and her paintings were chosen for two of the international exhibitions "Painting on the Edge".

Landscape paintings give her a lot of pleasure, as does landscape and trying to paint it. She believes God is immanent in his creation and tries to communicate this in the patterns, colours and moods noticed in likely subjects. She enjoys trying to make a beautiful thing, believing that beauty is healing, and also enjoys solving the pictorial problems involved.

E-mail: swinarskij@yahoo.com

Specializing in custom portraits and landscapes rendered in oil on canvas.

I spent the first few years of my life growing up in the foothills of Austria. My parents had taken political asylum there from a then communist Poland. In January of 1984 we arrived in Peterborough, Ontario. I immediately became consumed by the drastic difference in landscape and culture. I began at an early age expressing my perception through drawing. I relished in the great outdoors exploring the many lakes and wilderness of the region. Several years later I began to spend my summer holidays back in Austria with my Grandfather. Every year we would set off on a different adventure to explore the diverse cultures and countries of Europe. Having had the opportunity to visit many of the great museums and galleries of the old world instilled an aspiration for traditionand mastery in what had become an unshakeable desire to pursue life as an artist. My formal education began at the Ontario College of Art and Design, followed by a brief but unforgettable year in Paris. There I studied at the Sorbonne, absorbing the richness of art, culture, history and romance. Upon returning to Toronto I continued my studies in an atelier under the tutelage and mentorship of master portrait artist, John Viljoen. I now call British Columbia home where I am motivated by the life and landscape of the most beautiful country in the world. I aspire to contribute to the wealth of art that strives to document the region and its people.

Herbert Wittrin, painter
Entrance to Mesachie Lake

Herbert Wittrin

P.O. Box 305
6603 Bear Lake Road
Mesachie Lake, BC V0R 2N0

Phone: 250 749-3818
Email: sndy116@Yahoo.com or swittrin@Shaw.ca

HERBERT WITTRIN was born in East Prussia (now Poland, then Germany), he emigrated to Canada in 1954, settled in Vancouver, BC then moved to Mesachie Lake on Vancouver Island in 1989.

After a career as a commercial artist, he retired in 1984. This allowed him to work full time in Fine Arts, where formerly, this was a parttime pursuit only.

The beauty of nature, and in particular, his love of Vancouver Island, is reflected in his landscape scenes.

Herb uses oils and watercolors where they suit the mood of a painting; but his preferred medium is EGG TEMPERA, and most recently, he has adapted his own unique style based on the "Sgraffito" method. He does not believe that one specific style is necessary to successfully express his feeling in his art. Herb says, "I adapt the treatment that best suits the mood of that painting." All work is done by the artist in his own studio, located within his home.
