Green Grows the island-O

Willow, oak, hemlock and maple merge and mix
close ranks against disfiguring clear cuts
opening only to give us
the greenest green of the year
endless stretches of green meadows
their verdure defies the painter's brush
there are too many greens for one palette
even the broom and dandelion,
wild blue lupin lose in the natural competition

Let us savour and become drunk
on this gift of Nature
for only too soon autumn will splash
its competitive colours on the canvas
