Irma Livingstone
 |
~ By Elizabeth Symon of Cedar Creek Writers
Irma invited me into her studio overlooking
Quamichan Lake on a recent fine October day.
Reflected in her painting the lake could be seen in
early fall and winter, with all its colour variations.
Meanwhile we talked of many things, of her dog
Tess, computer – literate youth, and of travel in
New England.
Art was of course the main subject of our
conversation, of how Irma took her degree in art
and education at Denver, Colorado and taught in
elementary school there.
Later, after marrying Blair, a fellow student on a
hockey scholarship, they lived in Toronto, Calgary and White Plains, N. Y., before moving here.
IBM was her husband's employer, the initials standing for I've been moved, Irma said with a smile.
Victoria, the scene of a daughter's wedding, provided the first glimpse of this part of B. C.
If you visit Vancouver Island you never want to leave, it's been said, and Irma and her husband came back to
settle here 20 years ago, when Blair took early retirement.
Now happily settled in Maple Bay, there is time and space for painting even if shared with a TV, but Irma's going
to buy Blair headphones for Christmas, I was told.
Golf, you see, is Blair’s passion, on the greens and at home on the sports channel.
Sometime back Irma was President of CVAC for a successful two-year term.
Teaching has always been what Irma enjoys as much as painting, and Irma combines the two now instructing at
the Elder College here.
Our time together passed so quickly I'm sure there are lots of questions I should have asked, a chance to catch up by e-mail, you say.
No computer for Irma, though, they don't agree with me, she says, and I saw her laptop firmly shut when I passed by her desk.
Encourage creativity is Irma’s motto for life, and one she pursues to the fullest and inspires others too.
