President's MessageThe June 3rd opening of Aboriginal Arts Aware was a success. Another great show, curated by Jeffrey Birkin, saw a remarkable array of pieces from various private collections. Opening night saw the Spirit Drummers of the Cowichan Valley and over 100 guests. The Board of Directors of CVAV had to make the difficult yet prudent decision to close the show that same night. The previous night an attempt had been made to enter the venue. What does that tell us about the need for a first class, public art gallery in the Cowichan Valley? We need a properly designed and secure public art gallery of the caliber that you see in other island communities (see the Comox Arts Gallery) and we need it now! As you are aware, the provincial government recently announced that it would not share the lucrative gaming monies with the people of the province, and it has drastically reduced other grants for all non-profits societies as well. How can the Cowichan Valley afford a new arts center? We can if we refuse to support governments of all levels, who fund the arts in good times, abandoning it in hard times. We can if Cowichan citizens are prepared to support the local artisans and crafts people by purchasing locally produced, one-of-a-kind art and craftworks instead of imports, effectively putting our local money where our local mouths are. And we really can if we are prepared to work together for the future of public art in this community! Submitted by Judy Brayden, a Cowichan Valley resident of three years who is a visual artist and designer. She is currently serving on the CVAC Board of Directors. Online arts news
