Judging of the Show
While entry to the show is on a non-juried basis, the Arts Council wishes to acknowledge outstanding creative accomplishments. Art professionals will review the work for excellence in originality, composition, impact and technique. Judges' Award, Awards of Honour and Merit will be announced at the Gala Opening.
The Judges:
David Goatley, SFCA is widely recognized as one of North America's leading portrait painters. Originally trained in London, England, where he was born, David has completed over 300 portrait commissions all across the continent since arriving here with his family in 1992.
In political life he has painted Their Excellencies Iona Campagnolo and James Dunsmuir, Lieutenant Governors of BC, the Hon. Deborah Grey MP, the official Parliamentary portraits of Former speaker Gilbert Parent and Prime Minister Kim Campbell. He recently completed portraits of the retiring Presidents of the University of Alberta and Trent University, the Chancellor of UVIC and the President of Canadian Pacific Railways.
Bateman described him as "A truly fine painter in the Sargent style who works with confidence and grace and a true respect for the quality of the paint"
Joanne Thomson is concentrating on two very different themes in her artwork: the external and the internal. Landscapes are portrayed in vivid colour as vast sweeping vistas or intimate inner forest spaces. The 'Bottled" series is an expanding body of work using the bottle as a visual metaphor for human communication and a satirical commentary on its failings and limitations. Deceptively simple on first glance, both themes are characterized by Joanne's clear lines and clean colours.
Joanne is an accomplished artist in watercolour and illustration. She has earned a Master Degree in Adult Education and loves to open people's eyes to their own creative potential. Joanne teaches small classes in her studio as well as through the University of Victoria Continuing Education, The Victoria College of Art, and Saanich Silver Threads.
Visitors to the show will also vote for their favourite. People's Choice Award will be made on the last day of the show, Sunday, April 10.
