I arrived at Corry and Shakey Reay Suter's home on
an overcast day and entered a world of art and angels,
music and magic. The musician couple were playing
backgammon on an ornate carved board / box affair
that Corry picked up at an auction - story has it, that it
was once used for smuggling hashish out of India. We
jokingly probed it looking for hidden panels but then I
remembered I why I was there - to do an interview.
I was further distracted by Corry's art work which
adorned every wall in their cozy home - large panels
of soft luminescent clouds that on closer inspection reveal angels and elusive beings that appear from Corry's
subconscious - other work was pen and ink-all of it very personal, as are the songs Corry writes.
Corry didn't plan to be a vocalist or songwriter. She married Reay in 1994 - he was the musician, writing
original music and playing harmonica, and his father, on hearing Corry sing, encouraged her to delve deeper into
her creative well. Now she and Shakey Reay collaborate on their music and perform with Little Blue Planet, a trio
that includes acoustic guitarist, Blue Ray Luxemburg.
Corry and Reay met through a mutual friend at a Folk Guild Coffee House at St Andrew's Church, in Cowichan
Station. They married in the same picturesque church exactly one year later. As Reay says, "I was a singer /
songwriter harp player who married an artist, now I am a harp player playing for a singer/songwriter." Reay is a
well-known harpist in the West Coast music world, having played blues, country, folk and R & B for over 20 years.
Corry says he can make his harmonica sound like fiddle music or saxophone, I think he creates magic with it.
We took coffee out to the covered back porch where the sudden spring rain threatened to drown our
conversation. I asked about recent concerts. Corry replied, "We just want to share our music. Creativity carries a
responsibility to create positive joyful energy, especially the way the world is now."
"We'll happily play benefit concerts if we feel it's a good cause," Reay added.
This generous of spirit couple both work day jobs and play gigs or practice in their home studio every weekend. They recorded
their most recent CD, "A Meeting of Angels" at their home studio and had it professionally mastered in Toronto. They now have
enough original music to produce another. Like all artists, they hope to live solely by their music, soon.
