Morgan Saddington

 Profile of an Artist
Profile of an Artist Morgan Saddington I am a Canadian jewellery designer working from my home studio on Vancouver Island. I hand link and knit sterling silver wire into a variety of chains based on chainmaille and armour patterns from medieval times. By using these patterns I have created my own distinct pieces and designs.

I have always been drawn to silver jewellery by the appearance and versatility of the metal. The ability to create something with such movement and fluidity from a solid material is what I find so appealing.

All of the silver chains are handmade from start to finish. I use different gauges of sterling silver wire which is coiled onto various sizes of mandrels. These coils of wire are then cut by hand with a jeweller's saw to produce numerous links. the links are then assembled one at a time into the various patterns of chains.

Some of the chains have soldered rings, some are cold joined. The clasps are hand forged. The chains are tumble polished in a rock tumbler to bring out the brilliant silver shine. To finish off, I like to add a small accent by fusing glass beads, stones or my handmade silver beads.

I am a very visual person. I love to look at books and magazines, at photographs of other metal work. I seem drawn to design and clean looking pieces. If I am ever stuck or not sure how to begin a new piece I tend to go back through my collection of books and magazines.

It seems each time I do this I see something new, even though I may have gone through that publication numerous times before. I look at pieces for inspiration and ideas to create my own work. I look for simplicity in design not necessarily in construction.

I also crave quiet. I feel with having a family I am limited with my quiet time. When it's quiet, I can think and visualize the piece and begin to construct it without having to sketch it first. When I don't have that quiet, I tend to sketch more. To get ideas out in bits and pieces, to record them before they are forgotten because I never know when I will get that uninterrupted quiet time.

In the past year I have been exploring different methods of incorporating colour into my work. I have been focusing on the use of coloured pencil on copper.

In 1991 I received an Associate Degree in Visual Arts from Comosun College in Victoria, British Columbia. I have also taken several workshops and courses over the last several years. Some of these include silversmithing, linked and knitted chains, creative metalsmithing and etching on metal.

I was the winner of the Best Jewellery Award at the Sooke Fine Arts Show in Sooke British Columbia for a piece entitled 'Entwined.' I am also an active participant in numbers tours and shows including the Stinking Fish Studio Tour, the Visions Art Studio Tour, the Sidney Fine Arts Show and the Sooke Fine Arts Show.
