Daniel Gintowt

 Profile of an Artist
Profile of an Artist Artwork by Danial Gintowt Daniel Gintowt is an anomaly in our artist community. He is an emerging primitive expressionist, of the most unique nature. Daniel was born in1958 in Montreal. He was educated in Canada and at the American School of Paris. He is untutored in the theory, history and traditional techniques of "art", but has attended Science Fiction and Fantasy Conventions, and co-founded an art group, the Birks House Artists.

According to Daniel he "is an artist at 50% passing educational wise", but without a doubt the process of making images and trying to express their place in his concept of the universe is his entire waking occupation. According to Daniel he arrived in our town because he wanted to become a member of the Cowichan Valley Arts Council. It is troubling at the least to know how to include Daniel's unique presence and contribution, but surely, he is a true "artist".

His imagery is Chagall-like and evocative. It is emotional and raw and seemingly never finished. He considers himself a "spiritual artist of Beyond Infinity...a conceptualist". Daniel has written many pieces of prose/poetry to explain his "conceptualist" beliefs, but to the rest of us, these writing are difficult to navigate, almost unintelligible. However, when you ask Daniel to tell you the story in his paintings, he begins to unravel a dream-tale embedded in iconic images, shapes, colour, and layer upon layer of collage. Informed by his personal, psychological journey and his fears and memories, his concept of soul is one that is clear and meaningful to Daniel alone.

Daniel has developed a method of image-making in which he paints, and then photographs his work, mounts it on foam core and then adds collage material, rephotographing what could be countless times. These treatments enhance the physical surface and serve to synthesize the images. Knowing when to stop is a problem for most artists; but with Daniel, he cannot cease. His art is truly is the personal unravelling of his endless thoughts.
